widespread fear of fire

The town of Newburyport experienced a devastating fire in 1811 that decimated over 250 buildings. Stephen was just 5 years old then, living on Ship Street, just two blocks from where the fire started. Soon after the flames were doused, the town leaders enacted the “Brick Acts” of 1811 and 1812 mandating that all buildings in downtown Newburyport must be constructed of brick. Ever after, the fear of fire was present and may have influenced Stephen’s fate.

another fire sparked

Another fire started on August 17, 1820 in Newburyport (in a barn or stable) between Temple Street and Charter Streets, bounded by State Street. It was late at night and continued into early morning hours. The fire quickly spread to more buildings. Horses died and families were displaced- the numbers vary by account .No one disputes that there was no loss of life.
